Zimbabwe loses fourth serving minister, prison commissioner to covid-19
London, Jan. 23, 2021 (AltAfrica)-Zimbabwe’s Transport Minister Joel Matiza has become the fourth serving Minister to succumb to the virus just days after the country lost Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo
Joel Biggie Matiza was the third minister to die of the dreaded virus in just a single week. His death was confirmed late on Friday by government spokesperson Nick Mangwana. Matiza was said to have been hospitalised this past week.
He was a former Mashonaland East governor and until death, the current Zanu PF provincial chairperson.
Agriculture minister Perrance Shiri died of the vicious respiratory disease late last year while Manicaland provincial affairs minister Ellen Gwaradzimba and Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo both died early this week.
Zimbabwe government officials are under siege from the disease with both Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi reportedly under the claws of the pandemic.
Outside the incumbents, former minister Aeneas Chigwedere and ex-Zanu PF MP Christopher Chigumba also died on Friday from the disease that has killed nearly a thousand locals and infected over 30 000.
Also lost to covid was ex Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner General Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi. He was 73.
Zimondi was among former President Robert Mugabe’s close allies and constituted a group of service chiefs credited for keeping the late leader’s rein from fierce challenge by the opposition,
