18 family members get COVID-19 after Xmas gathering in Pennsylvania
London, Jan. 19, 2021 (AltAfrica)-in Pennsylvania, eighteen members of the same family have tested positive for coronavirus following a huge Christmas party which went ahead despite one woman having a scratchy cough.
What started out as a holiday gathering for the Reynolds family, from Milmont Park, Pennsylvania, turned into a superspreader event that left two people in hospital with Covid.
Darlene Reynolds, 55, says her son Luke has just been discharged from hospital after contracting coronavirus at Christmas but her husband, Stephen, has been on a ward for nine days.
It comes after the family – including some extended relatives who travelled from Canada – got together for a festive party on December 27.
That’s despite the fact Darlene admits to waking up the previous day with a scratchy tickle in her throat, reports ABC 7.
‘I had no fever because I kept checking it – no fever, no fever, no fever. I said, I’ll keep a distance since I have a tiny little cough,’ said Reynolds.
The next day, family members arrived for the party soon after which, people who attended started getting sick too.
Darlene added: ‘So we were sick, but we didn’t know we had Covid. We could’ve had the flu, but it was scary.
‘We got tested, and we tested positive. And then my husband tested positive the next day. ‘And then (my daughter) was getting sick and she tested positive and my son tested positive.’
In all, 18 family members ranging in ages from one to 62 became infected with the virus following their get-together on December 27.
Darlene’s husband Stephen has suffered the worst and still requires hospital treatment.
