Arsenal, Mesut Ozil ‘reach deal to terminate his £350k-a-week contract
London, Jan. 16, 2021 (AltAfrica)-Arsenal and Mesut Ozil have reportedly reached an agreement in principle to terminate the midfielder’s £350,000-a-week contract.
The German had previously stated his intention to see out the remainder of his contract at Arsenal, which expires at the end of the season.
But according to The Athletic, Ozil has now gone back on his word and is ready to leave £7million on the table to cut the deal short.
This will enable him to join Fenerbahce as a free agent.
But Ozil fell down the pecking order in north London when Unai Emery took the reins, and was then frozen out of the first team altogether by Mikel Arteta.
Ozil has not kicked a ball for the Gunners all season, but had plans to see out his contract this campaign and decide on his future in the summer transfer window.
The German’s circumstances have now changed, with both DC United and Fenerbahce leading the way to sign the 32-year-old this month.
Ozil has dropped continuous hints over the past month that he will likely join Fenerbahce.
And his agent Erkut Sogut has even confirmed as much, telling beIN SPORTS: “Mesut Ozil can now meet with any club he wants, sign a contract.
Whatever is best for Mesut. Mesut only lacks match fitness. There is no training lacking. Mesut is fit for now. Everyone knows that Mesut is from Fenerbahce.
“He announced it. Mesut is not just a football player. Mesut is Fenerbahce. He always said that if he came to Turkey, he would only play for Fenerbahce. I think it is very important that Mesut comes not only as a footballer but also as a lover of Fenerbahce.
“There is a process at the moment. We can’t say it’s over until we’ve signed it in the process. I hope so.”
