London placed under tighter restrictions from Friday night after upsurge in covid-19 cases
London, Oct. 15, 2020 (AltAfrica)-Million of people in London will face tougher Covid restrictions from Saturday onwards, moving from Tier 1 to Tier 2, local MPs have been told as infection rates in the capital continue to increase, multiple sources have confirmed.
The health minister Helen Whately informed London MPs in a conference call on Thursday morning that people must not meet with anybody outside their household or support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place. People should also aim to avoid public transport.
Boris Johnson is expected to sign off on the harshest tier 3 coronavirus measures for millions more people in the north of England later on Thursday, as Downing Street piled last minute pressure on local leaders in Greater Manchester to accept the changes.
The move was recommended by the chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, at a meeting of the Joint Biosecurity Centre last night.
Local leaders were given a briefing from government scientists who warned deaths from coronavirus will continue to rise for at least three weeks and the NHS risks being overwhelmed unless the strictest curbs are imposed on another 4 million people.
The rule of six will continue to apply outdoors, as will the 10pm curfew for the hospitality sector.
People can continue to travel to work or to access education using public transport, but they should look to reduce the number of journeys they make “where possible”.
