Nigeria, Israel to partner on methanol fuel technology
London, June 9, 2020 (AltAfrica)-Nigeria and Israel are to sign bilateral agreement on the use of Methanol Fuel Production Technology for mutual benefits.
This was made known when the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Shimon Ben Shoshan paid a courtesy call on Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, in Abuja the nation’s capital.
Methanol fuel is an alternative biofuel for internal combustion and other engines, either in combination with gasoline or independently. Methanol (a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group) may be made from hydrocarbon or renewable resources, in particular natural gas and biomass respectively.
Speaking during the visit, the Minister, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said that Nigeria is determined to explore and develop the Methanol fuel technology because it holds the key to the economic diversification for the country.
Dr. Onu noted that for Nigeria to become the manufacturing hub of Africa, it must utilise all its natural resources and create employment for its teeming youths.
“We want to make sure we domesticate the technology in Nigeria, we don’t want the situation where the experience we had with crude oil will be repeated in natural gas, we want the opportunity to domestic the technology so that we can own it and then be in the position to also develop. We will be very happy to continue our relationship with your nation“, he said.
Describing Methanol as a “Wonder Chemical”, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu stressed that its application would impact the Power, Energy and Manufacturing sector, adding that with its introduction, Nigeria would soon become the manufacturing hub of Africa.
“Nigeria would appreciate the inputs of Israel to ensure the smooth takeoff of the methanol policy”, he added.
Earlier, the Israel Ambassador Mr. Shimon Ben Shoshan, said Israel is willing to share its technology know- how and expertise on the Methanol fuel technology with Nigeria.
The Envoy stated that the Methanol fuel technology is a better alternative to petroleum as it is cheaper, faster ad pollution free.
” We are trying to bring Science and technology from Isreal to help the Nigerian people and to learn from Nigeria by transferring technology from here to Isreal. Nigeria is blessed with several resources and one of the reason why I am here is concerning the gas and oil that Nigeria is blessed with. We need the products we need day by day“.
“We can do it cheaper, faster and better with less pollution as it is done today and with this kind of chemical, innovation we can move on and Nigeria can produce it. The bigger project with Nigeria is moving with a pipe to Morocco and from there to Europe and the rest, the sky is the limit. We are here in order to work together, we hope that the the Nigerian government will move to sign this kind of agreement with the State of Isreal in order to start moving to start this kind of partnership“, he said.
