One of the new test centres ready for operation is located at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH, Kano.
This is sequel to an earlier promise made by the Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire that a centre will be built for the North-West zone in the ancient city of Kano.
The Deputy Governor of Kano state, who is also the Chairman Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 in the state, while inspecting the facility said henceforth samples of suspected cases will no longer be taken to Abuja but tested in the state.
He said neighbouring states can bring their samples for tests at the centre for timely intervention as the facility is for all states of the North-West zone.
Health minster, Dr. Osagie Ehanire also said more isolation centres have been created throughout the country, sighting example of Lagos State which added a 60-bed isolation centre on Monday.
Dr. Ehanire noted that the pet project of Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, N“FUTURE ASSURED” also donated a centre in the FCT to be used for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
Chairman of the PTF on COVID-19 and the Secretary to the Government, SGF, Mr. Boss Mustapha said the task force was developing a policy on the use of face mask which will be released soon.
Mr. Mustapha who emphasised that the welfare of frontline workers was paramount, commended their efforts in the fight against Coronavirus.
Nigeria previously had seven molecular laboratories with the capacity to test for Covid-19. They were located in Lagos (2), Osun, Oyo Ebonyi, Edo state and FCT.
