Morocco deploys helicopters, 745 mobile medical units to confront severe weather in remote villages
London, Jan. 2, 2020 (AltAfrica)-Morocco has mobilised 2,481 medical and paramedical staff as part of its “Riaya” program in the face of cold waves, announced Noureddine Boutayeb, Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Interior.
The 2019-2020 winter program includes 745 mobile medical units mobilised in Morocco’s mountainous regions.
he program has also mobilized 465 ambulances, arranged 1,162 landing pads for helicopters, and distributed 26,000 tonnes of firewood.
The Ministry of Interior first launched the plan in 2007 to assist populations affected by cold waves.
The plan includes supplying the target villages with commodities, heating, and livestock feed, as well as linking them to telecommunication systems.
The plan is an inter-ministerial effort, with the High Commission for Water and Forests distributing firewood, the Ministry of Agriculture subsidising livestock feed, and the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, and Logistics mobilising snow removal equipment
