Nokia, Globalstar to begin deployment of 4.9G networks in five African countries
London, Nov. 14, 2019 (AltAfrica)-Finnish telecommunication giant, Nokia is partnering with data services firm, Globalstar to accelerate the launch and deployment of fourth industrial revolution 4.9G network across five African countries
This is after Globalstar secured rights for the deployment of the Band 53 for terrestrial LTE/4.9G networks in South Africa, Mozambique, Gabon, Botswana and Rwanda.
4.9G network is basically another incremental upgrade to 4G LTE, this time super-charged with large antenna arrays. (See Eurobites: Nokia Promises ‘4.9G’ in 2017.)
Nokia introduced its ‘4.9G’ technologies towards the tail end of 2017, enabling operators to improve network performance and manage higher infrastructure demands on the road to 5G.
Nokia and Globalstar have developed a solution to provide high capacity, low latency and secure connectivity to enterprises to simplify their digital transformation journeys.

“High capacity data transfer and on-premise computing capabilities ensure efficient and secure digital automation, for large and small enterprises, indoors and outdoors, and in both urban and remote areas,” says Shkumbin Hamiti, head of ecosystem and partnerships, Nokia Digital Automation.
Barbee Ponder, Globalstar general counsel and Vice-President of regulatory affairs adds: “Now that Nokia has become an authorised value-added reseller (VAR), they will be able to tailor solutions for individual customers and provide critical connectivity for assets and people when operating also outside of the secure private wireless coverage provided by Nokia.”
The solution can be deployed in multiple sites and across national borders and has been developed under the 3rd Generation Partnership Project.
The solution is based on Nokia’s industrial-grade private wireless Digital Automation Cloud platform together with Globalstar’s 3GPP Band 53 spectrum.
