South Africa arrest 300 undocumented African migrants
London, Nov. 10, 2019 (AltAfrica)-South African police arrested about 300 undocumented foreigners-African migrants in Johannesburg, said the police on Saturday.
The police said the multisectoral law enforcement agents arrested the migrants on Friday in a hijacked 21-storey building in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
Hillbrow is an inner city residential neighborhood of Johannesburg. It is known for its high levels of population density, unemployment, poverty, prostitution and crime and home to many African migrants particularly from Southern Africa
“A total of 380 (353 males and 27 females) undocumented nationals from Malawi and Zimbabwe, including those found during roadblocks and in other operations, were taken in for processing and verification of their stay in the country,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.
“A lot more other crime areas were addressed where in Johannesburg, police confiscated counterfeit goods estimated at 1.7 million U.S. dollars at Lotto Building on Rahima Moosa Street,”said the spokesperson.
She said police also found in the building and seized equipment such as stencils and plates suspected of being utilized to produce counterfeit luxury and sports brand labels. Counterfeit Rizla rolling paper and cigarettes were also confiscated.
The police were carrying out crime prevention and combating operations for the “Safer Festive Season” initiative which is to create awareness and bring crime down over the festive season.
