Nigeria to set up new agency for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics
London, Sep 24, 2019 (AltAfrica)-The Government of Nigeria says plans are underway for the establishment of an agency to coordinate its programmes and implement policies on Artificial Intelligence and robotics in the country.
Robotics is a branch of technology which deals with robots. Robots are programmable machines which are usually able to carry out a series of actions autonomously, or semi-autonomously
On the other hand, Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science. It involves developing computer programs to complete tasks which would otherwise require human intelligence
Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, gave the hint at a meeting with members of the Nigerian Academy of Science in Abuja, Nigeria’s seat of power.
According to Onu, a research institute or agency is to be set up to coordinate all research activities relating to AI and robotics.
The planned agency would work with tertiary institutions in the country, the minister added.
The minister said currently, no institution was coordinating the AI and robotics research in the country saying “We believe that when that happens, it will help us to get to know the level of our research in our universities.”
