Liberian President Weah, Eto’o, Drogba, Other African Soccer Legends Storm Nigeria For Ambode Farewell Game

London, May 14, 2019 (AltAfrica)– The Nigeria’s commercial capital city, Lagos will be agog on 18 May, 2019 when an array of African soccer legends put on their hanged booths once again to trade tackles in honour of the outgoing Governor of Lagos, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode in an event tagged The Match International at the Agege Stadium.
Alternative Africa reports that notable among the legends who have confirmed their participation is the Liberian President, George Weah, who was a former World Footballer of the Year award winner. Others are the Cameroon’s legendary Samuel Eto’o Fils, Cote d’Ivoire’s Didier Drogba and his compatriot Yaya Toure, Ghanaian Michael Essien, Senegalese Hadji Diouf, Diomansy Kamara also of Senegal, South African- based Nigerian ex player Peterside Idah, Geremi Njitap of Cameroon, Lomana Lua- Lua of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Didier Zokora from Cote d’Ivoire, Ivoiren Kader Keita, Ghanaian Richard Kingston and African-born French ex player Christian Karembu.
These foreign football legends will be joined by their Nigerian counterparts who include former Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai, ex Super Eagles players Finidi George, Mutiu Adepoju, Samson Siasia, Augustine Eguavoen, Joseph Yobo, Ike Shorunmu, Kanu Nwankwo, Austin Jay- Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Amunike, Phillip Shuaibu, who is the Deputy Governor of Edo State in South South Nigeria, Taribo West, Victor Ezeji, Tijani Babangida, Emma Okocha, Ifeanyi Udeze, Uche Okechukwu and Garba Lawal.
Alternative Africa understands that The Match International is put together by ex- Nigeria internationals including Samson Siasia, Augustine Eguavoen, Waidi Akanni and Mutiu Adepoju. The one day event is packaged to celebrate the untold excellence achieved by the administration of Akinwunmi Ambode, particularly in the sports sector where he is leaving a good record.
The event will not be an all football affair as entertainment flavour has been added with performance from top artistes such as the Olamide, Small Doctor and a host of others.
Chairman of The Match International, Waidi Akanni, who was a former Chairman of Lagos State Football Association said the eagerly awaited event is expected to inspire others in governance and corporate world to work harder towards contributing their quotas to national development.
“Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has performed excellently well and particular in sports, as he has continued to provide facilities for sports to thrive in the state and also making Lagos the hub of sporting activities in the Sub- Saharan Africa,” Akanni said.
“Celebrating Ambode would surely inspire and encourage others to emulate his good works. He is without doubt a man of excellence and honour, worthy of celebration,” he remarked.
Akanni, reiterated the readiness of the organizers to host the top African soccer legends and their Nigerian counterparts, as well as, distinguished guests on the day. He assured that top notch logistics and security arrangements have been put in place to have a hitch free event.
“This farewell football match would also be a great opportunity for Nigerians to see some of their African soccer idols in live action, here, in Lagos.
“We shall also be using this event to raise funds and galvanize support for several charity bodies in the country,” he added.
