Human Rights Group Condemns Killings in Nigeria

London, April 10, 2019 (AltAfrica)-A pro-democracy and human rights group, The Nigeria Voters Assembly, has strongly condemned the incessant killings of innocent Nigerians under the guise of ethnic, religious, inter communal and inter-tribal excuses saying the rights to life is most fundamental of all human rights.
Losing such rights pre-judicially and without reasonable justifications, according to the group, amounts to dereliction of duty on the part of those whose security is constitutionally their duties.
The Group in a release signed by its President, Comrade Mashood Erubami, called on President Buhari to “now be more concerned and rise to stop killing of Nigerians”, stating that it is time to make the killers know that free killings will no more be acceptable as business as usual in the country.
“Anybody that kills and is found to have done so through wrong processes must be made to pay the appropriate stringent price for doing so under the laws,” the group advocated.
The Human Rights Group also called on the President to note that security of life and properties are the primary obligation of government hence government should move beyond merely condemning killings wherever it took place, urging that, “instead, serious follow up actions should be taken to discourage reprisal attacks while those found to have committed the offenses of killing and their masterminds found to have been promoting, fueling the escalation or giving support to such dastardly actions must not be allowed to go scot free.”
The Group pinpointed the killings in Rivers State, particularly during elections and other killings being reported nearly on daily basis as a practice taken too far, which should be countered judicially against criminals perpetrating the menace of bloodletting in the State.
“In fact, incessant killings that had become the order of the day in Kaduna, Nasarawa. Borno, Rivers, Bayelsa, Sokoto, Kogi and Abia States should be declared in stronger terms as unacceptable in the country. The Chairman of each local government where the killings have become rampant must be frontally made to understand that they are deficient in their obligations to secure lives and properties in their Constituencies. The Governors with the support of Traditional Rulers and Community Elders in the affected areas must start to promote peace and ensure that conflicts do not develop into serious crises of killings and maiming,” the group advocated..
The Voters Assembly therefore said, “time has come for the government to start to send very strong warning signals to those who are criminally minded, those who have taken the commission of murder as their pastime, that there are laws against their actions and that nobody however highly connected will be spared from giving account of their actions”.
“Any governor or Traditional Rulers discovered to be promoting or supporting cultism, kidnapping and insurgency, should be exposed and made to face the law.
“Governors whose children are tucked away overseas should not be allowed to take out the children of the poor, exploiting their poor conditions to perpetrate crimes, setting them against the communities to freely take lives while the local government chairmen, Traditional Rulers and Governors watch the spread with glee.”
The Group finally called on the President to direct the Army and the Police to provide adequate and effective policing of areas that have been discovered to be flash points for violence to carry out remedial exercises that will quell crises and discourage the spreading to other areas.
