Africa’s Pride, Mohammed Salah The Record Breaker
By Adesina Idris
London, April 7, 2019 (AltAfrica)-Two time and reigning African footballer of the year,Egyptian Mohamed Salah has broken another long standing record in the premiership. The boy just loves breaking record. He has become the fastest player in Liverpool history to reach 50 English Premier League goals.
The 26-year-old striker scored an important second-half goal for the Reds against Southampton with 10 minutes left to play on Friday night.
The goal which came in his 69th appearance for Merseyside club, confirmed he reached a half-century three games quicker than previous record holder Fernando Torres.
Salah already holds the record for most goals (32) in a 38-game season, beating the likes of Shearer (Blackburn in 1995-96), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, 2007-08) and Luis Suarez (Liverpool, 2013-14).
He is also the first player in the Premier league to be named and awarded player of the year award in a debut season
After the match, Salah told Sky Sports:
‘I think that’s goal number 50 for Liverpool in the Premier League so that’s special – and after nine games [without one], but Henderson scored I think for the first time in maybe 30 games so we are both happy.
‘Not at all [I didn’t think about passing], as a striker I need to score, I am thinking to score. Maybe if someone is in a better position I can think but I just took my decision to shoot and I scored so I’m very happy about it.’
The goal was also his first goal after nine games for Liverpool without a single goal.
Jurgen Klopp described it a “wow” moment, Mohamed Salah described it as “special”.
The speed at which Salah has amassed Premier League goals for Liverpool leaves him in good company among the top-flight’s greatest strikers.
A return of 50 goals in 69 games means he is third on the all-time list, behind only the league’s overall top scorer Alan Shearer (who spent his Premier League career with Blackburn and Newcastle) and Ruud van Nistlerooy (Manchester United)
Salah is one of just eight Liverpool players who have reached a half-century of Premier League goals and by achieving the feat in 69 games has beaten Torres’ previous record of 72 matches.
Torres was one of the Reds’ most prolific scorers – netting 65 league goals in 102 appearances – and only Salah (44) has scored more in all competitions in his debut season than the Spaniard (33).
Salah’s record-breaking debut campaign was capped by the Premier League player of the year award – only Suarez and former England international Michael Owen had previously won it as Liverpool players.
He has gone on to pick up four Premier League player of the month awards, which only former captain Steven Gerrard (six) can better.
The Egyptian has been unable to surpass all-time leading Liverpool scorer Ian Rush’s record of 44 goals in a calendar year – though he equalled Roger Hunt and Robbie Fowler’s tally of 37 in 2018-Additional Information from BBC sports
