Nigeria: Buhari congratulates Obasanjo at 82, says he harbours no third term agenda
London, March 6, 2019 (AltAfrica)– Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has sent goodwill messages to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 82nd birthday describing him as “a passionate and great patriot who deserves accolades for his immeasurable contributions to our democracy and national unity”
In a statement, President Buhari acknowledged that “regardless of our political differences with Obasanjo, I still hold him in the highest esteem because his contributions to the development of the country overshadow those differences.”
He said, “Chief Obasanjo gave a good account of himself and inspired his juniors with his wit and other leadership skills.”
According to president Buhari, “Nigeria’s successful transition to democratic rule in October 1979 was one of Obasanjo’s remarkable contributions to national development.”
“As he celebrates his 82nd Birthday Anniversary, I wish Chief Obasanjo more good health, knowledge and wisdom in the service of Nigeria and humanity”, President Buhari said.
Mr Obasanjo has been one of the most vocal critics of Mr Buhari. He supported Atiku Abubakar for the 2019 presidential election. Mr Abubakar lost to Mr Buhari in results announced by the electoral commission, INEC.
Meanwhile, President Muhammad Buhari says there is nothing like third term agenda for him as he plans to retire to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State after his current and final term ends in 2023.
He said this Tuesday at a meeting in Abuja with traditional rulers.
The monarchs were led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II.
Mr Buhari, who has just won reelection, asked the local leaders to support his government to consolidate on its achievements.
A statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said he welcomed them to the “next level”, the slogan of his reelection campaign
