The full statement below:
Being a Situation appraisal Joint Press Statement on the State of Security in Ogun State and the Conduct of Security Agencies prior and during the February 23rd 2019 Presidential and National Assembly Elections.
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights Cdhr Ogun, Human Rights and Grassroots Development Society HRGDS and Police Community Relations Committee PCRC having observed the February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly Elections in Ogun State and in quest to put some records straight , we have done an holistic situational critical analysis of our observations over the conduct of the Security agencies deployed for the elections duty and herein made available the content and demand
. That prior the elections there were palpable tension arising from the conduct of political parties campaign and the conduct of political actors which suspiciously led to the reorganization of the security architecture of the state and aggressive fortification of the elections with maximum and professional security by the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) comprising of the Military and other sisters Security Agencies ,headed by the Ogun State Commissioner of Police CP.Ahmed Iliyasu and complimented by three (3) other Commissioner of Police transferred to Ogun on Elections duty
(2). That we observed that each commissioner of Police was fully on ground and in control of each Senatorial District of Ogun State
3). That we commend holistically the uncompromising and Professional conduct of the Security Agencies during and After the last elections in Ogun State, especially the Nigeria Police Force under the able leadership of CP. Ahmed Iliyasu. It was evidential in the synergetic and strategic deployment of personnel during the poll and the obvious adherence to Election guidelines by the Military who were at least seen 300metres distance from the process, undoubtedly the arrangement paid off as Ogun State has been widely adjudged as one of the most peaceful states during the poll.
4). That we condemned the inhumane attack on INEC Officials and security personnel during the movement of Elections results somewhere around Eredo, Yewa South Ogun West Senatorial District, it is considered a dastard act, retrogressive and barbaric
(5). We commiserate with the Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police Ogun State Command and the family of late Sgt.Sunday Idoko who lost his life in the cause of escorting Elections result and defending the life of his fellow human beings. We therefore call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to give worthy intervention support to his family , that of the other Police Officers , Security Personnel and Corp members who died in the cause of the National assignment
(7). That we condemned the call for Militarization of the forthcoming Governorship and House of Assembly Elections in Ogun State, ad such is capable of causing voter apathy, whereby discouraging electorates effective participation; we therefore advise that all participating political parties should play the game according to the rules, more so that stakeholders should be more concerned about maximum sensitization and mobilization of electorates towards the poll
(8). We encourage electorates in Ogun State not to panic but go out in large number to perform their civic responsibility of voting candidates of their choice under a peaceful anticipatory atmosphere devoid of Militarism, intimidation and any form of harassment
(9). That we considered the previous Security arrangement of February 23rd 2019 Elections efficient and orderly if sustained for the forthcoming Governorship and House of Assembly Elections
(10). That we confirmed that numbers of suspects arrested over political thuggery and conduct capable of breaching peace among other criminal offenses during electioneering period are standing trial
(11). That the unnecessary call for the transfer of the Ogun State Commissioner of Police is barbaric, inordinate and inhumane considering the Commissioner of Police CP. Ahmed Iliyasu tireless efforts and evidential commitment to sustainable peace and security in Ogun State, what else should the commissioner and the command have done?
12). That we sue for continued Peace prior, during and after the forthcoming March 9 Governorship and House of Assembly Elections in Ogun State, we call on Political parties to respect and obey the Peace agreement they signed sometimes in December, 2018 and always accord respect for the dignity of Human Person.
Long live Ogun StateLong live Federal Republic of Nigeria
