Nigeria: Major underground tunnel on new Lagos-Ibadan rail completed
London, Feb. 5, 2019 (AltAfrica)-As Nigerians eagerly awaits the flag-off the passenger use of the first phase of the new rail line from Lagos to Abeokuta, works on the entire project-Lagos Ibadan standard gauge rail line have reached advanced stage.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to inaugurate the Lagos to Abeokuta axis of the project on Wednesday.
Ahead of that, a major challenge, an underground tunnel which has slowed down the pace of work has been completed.
The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who inspected the project last week said he was impressed by the pace of work to meet deadline shifted several times
Amaechi, stated that the inspection may be the last before the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo flags off the first phase in the next few days.
According to Amaechi, “I am impressed and from what I have seen, the Vice President is still going to ride on the train on the 6th except he has other arrangements.”
He noted that: “Once the Vice President flags it off, we will start using it and it will be free. The free ride will be for two months.”
He revealed that, the Vice President was coming to flag off the passenger use of the first phase from Lagos to Abeokuta which would reduce passenger travel time from one hour to 45 minutes, adding that, the reason why it was 45 minutes is because people might stop in different locations.
