Nigeria’s Super Falcons hammer Romania 4-1 to win bronze in China
London, Jan. 21, 2019 (AltAfrica)-Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the female national football team shrugged their 0-3 loss to China in their opening match of the just-concluded China Invitational Tournament to beat Romania 4-1 in the third place game of the competition.
The competition was a pre-France 2019 FIFA Women World Cup tune up event, which featured China, South Korea and Nigeria.
The Super Falcons took the lead in the just before the break through Chinwendu Ihezuo following Nigeria’s unrelenting pressure on the Europeans.
Romania fought back in the second half and equalised in the 55th minute, but Skipper Onome Ebi restored Nigeria’s lead in the 63rd minute, while Rita Chikwelu extended the advantage five minutes later.
Brighton and Hove Albion forward Ini Umotong sealed the win in the 83rd minute to hand the bronze medal to Thomas Dennerby’s side.
In the final game, China defeated South Korea 1-0 to win the competition.
Sunday’s victory is Nigeria’s first over an European team in 20 years.The Super Falcons’ next stop is the Cyprus Women’s Cup, which will hold from February 25 to March 7.
Other teams in the competition in Cyprus are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Italy, North Korea, Mexico, Slovakia, South Africa and Thailand.
