Nigerian New Rap Wiz kid, Adesola Akintunde- ‘Dazzy Flawless’ makes waves in Ogun
London, Jan. 6, 2019 (AltAfrica)- In an era when many, justifiably so, have come to associate rap music with delinquents, booze, sexism, materialism, even blood money and everything negative, endearing music buff to this genre of music will definitely require a lot of do.
A new ‘rap software’, Dazzy Flawless is however on the horizon, walking this intricate path and bringing freshness to the genre of music which has historical root in medieval Africa.
Her debut, an 11 track album titled ‘Reflection’ which she co-launched with her male colleague, Shittu’ is a creative effort and an attempt in search of a balance between the fast-pace energetic verve of rap, strong vocal delivery of upbeat lyrics, laced with street buzz and a lot of sense.
Born about three decades after DJ Cool Herc first put a modern seal to rap music through his ‘Back-To-School’ gigs in the Bronx, in New York, Dazzy Flawless, whose real name is Adesola Akintunde, has toiled through her teen, reworking the creative genes in her family to embrace and explore rap music as a medium of expression to reach out to her generation.
Woven into each of her six tracks in the album is her strong tomboy presence as a rap artist in a male dominated industry, and a suave blend of local flavours with street swag.
Arguably one of the best tracks on the album, her major offering ‘Konami Ni Kobo’, leaves a pleasant after taste in the body, giving listeners a crave for more.
Strong on beat, sharp on lyrics, ‘Kona mi ni kobo‘ (It costs me no pence) is Dazzy Flawless’s response to street demand as she shoots from the hip and let herself really go on this one track, where she tinkered with the ancient rhythm of African war dance.
Waxing philosophical in ‘Wait’, a track with hope in God as a thematic focus, the sacrifice that love requires to flourish is the subject matter in ‘Bae Bae’ in which she collaborated with Shittu.
For a debut album, Dazzy’s ‘One Day’ is already causing major stir in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, where Desola holds the ace as the only female rap artiste.
Drawing inspiration from life experience of struggle, hustles and other street dynamics that characterise daily living for youths in the country, Dazzy Flawless has successfully connected with the youths and may well post similar success with the older generation if well promoted.
With adequate airplay, collaboration with established acts in the industry and other creative promotional efforts, the music industry in Nigeria may in a short while start counting its gains as Desola takes the world by the storm. After all, Kona mi Ni Kobo.
