Nigeria: APC NWC overrules self, declares Sanwo-Olu Lagos APC guber candidate
London, October 3, 2018 (AltAfrica)-In a dramatic U-turn, the National Working Committee of the All Progressive Congress APC overruled its earlier position on “No primaries In Lagos” to affirming the results and declaring Babajide Sanwo-Olu the Lagog state Gubernatorial candidate of the party in 2019 general election
The NWC declaration ended governor Ambode’s battle for second term ticket on the platform of APC ,making him the first progressive incumbent governor in recent memories in Lagos to loose reelection battle and without a second term slot
APC NWC leader, Clement Ebiri overruled himself and announced Babajide Sanwo-Olu winner of APC guber primaries in Lagos
There had been confusion on the status of the exercise held in the 245 wards spread across the 20 local governments of the state, following its cancellation by the Chief Clement Ebri-led electoral panel set up by NWC to supervise the poll in which the Managing Director of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was his sole challenger.
But earlier on Wednesday, Clement Ebiri who affirmed the results of the primaries earlier cancelled by him said “after resolving some little problems at the end of the exercise, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu polled 970,851 votes and Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode scored 72,901 votes. With this, Mr Babajide is declared winner”
In a telephone interview with a leading Nigeria newspaper, Thisday shortly after the confusion in Lagos on Tuesday, National Chairman of APC, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, overruled the Ebri committee and ordered it to collate the results of the poll and declare it immediately.
Oshiomhole told THISDAY last night that it was wrong for the committee to annul an election that had been held, saying the proper thing to do was for the results to be declared, and whoever was dissatisfied should complain.
“The election has been held, anyone who is aggrieved should complain after the declaration of results,” saying the committee clearly overreached its brief.
In his acceptance speech, Sanwo-Olu after acknowledging governor Ambode for putting up a good fight, promised to run “an inclusive government” and called on all Lagosians to support him and the party in taking Lagos state to the next level”
