CAF Confederations Cup: Enyimba to meet Rayon Sports in quarter-final clash
London, August 31, 2018 (AltAfrica)-Nigeria’s sole representative in the CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba are through to the quarter final as group leaders and will meet Rayon Sports of Rwanda on September 18 in Kigali
The ‘peoples elephants’ yesterday defeated hard-fighting CARA Brazzaville of Congo by a lone goal scored by Wasiu Alalade in the 93rd minute after he took advantage of the rebound from Mfon Udoh’s second free-kick of the game in stoppage time.
Nigeria’s flag bearer in the continental competition took charge of the game at the blast of the whistle, showing grit and determination to secure a win on the renovated and fully packed Aba township stadium.
Enyimba threw up lots of goal scoring opportunities which had the fans edgy on their seats knowing full well how a win was needed to be certain of quarter-finals qualification.
Nigeria’s most successful club while pressing for a goal literarily camped in the opponents’ half for most part of the game in a poorly lit stadium.
The home team had 61% possession and attacked in search of the all-important goal but they were denied mainly by the CARA goalie and skipper Chancel Massa.
Mfon Udoh who was named Man of the Match was integral to the moves of the team and was close to getting the opener in the 80th minute when his free kick hit the woodwork.
After the final whistle was blown, CARA Brazzaville players’ whose continued participation was no longer in their hands were in an ecstatic mood when they learnt of the final score of Williamsville and Djoliba which ended in a goalless draw.
Meanwhile, there was pitch invasion by excited Aba fans who invaded the field in large numbers to celebrate the victory.
