BBOXX delivers smart solar home systems to 12,000 citizens in Togo

London, July 18, 2018 (AltAfrica)-BBOXX, a next generation utility, has successfully delivered energy access to over 12,000 Togolese citizens with its smart solar home systems, just six months into its operations in Togo.

In December 2017, BBOXX entered into an innovative partnership with the Government of Togo to provide energy access as part of the Government’s aim to dramatically improve electrification rates in Togo, particularly in rural areas.

The mission of “CIZO” (which means lighting up in “Guin” language) is to bring electricity to more than 2 million citizens by 2022. It will also provide the adoption of mobile payment solutions across the country, helping to improve the financial inclusion of rural communities.

In just six months, BBOXX Togo has grown its client base from 0 to 2,400, with a 45% increase in customers in May 2018 alone, created jobs for nearly 100 people from local communities in sales and installations. It has also grown from two shops in December 2017 to 10 shops, now serving all five regions of Togo.

BBOXX has maintained its relentless focus on innovation, working together with the Government of Togo on a programme to accelerate the deployment of BBOXX solar home systems in targeted areas. It also has plans to introduce new appliances including a solar-powered fan, from July 2018.

Mansoor Hamayun, Chief Executive Office of BBOXX, said: “It is really positive to see the impact BBOXX operations has had in Togo in just half a year. We have big ambitions to expand in the country and sell a further 10,000 units by the end of the year.

“It is unacceptable in 2018 that some countries in Africa, like Togo, still have a less than 50% electrification rate. Energy poverty is the issue of our age and we are addressing this head on, having provided energy access to 650,000 people globally to date.

“BBOXX continues to have a tangible impact in the region, enabling greater financial inclusion by providing reliable energy access and delivering power for smartphones, lights and home appliances.

“BBOXX also recently signed a similar deal with the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which will bring renewable electricity to 2.5 million citizens in the DRC by 2020.”
