Nigeria: Polytechnic fires rector for presenting fake PhD certificate
Osun, July 6, 2018 (AltAfrica)-The embattled acting rector of Igbajo Polytechnic, Igbajo, Osun State, Akinola Olaolu has been dismissed by the school authorities for allegedly presenting fake PhD and Masters certificates
The decision was the climax of many months of internal investigation. The report was presented to the polytechnic’s governing council and board of trustees on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Olaolu reportedly came into the school in December 2015 as a deputy rector to the former rector, Tanimowo Oke.
However, because he claimed to have a PhD in Economics from the UI, his arrival led to the exit of Oke, who had a master’s degree as of then.
More than eight months after his arrival, he was reported to have refused to produce his purported PhD certificate, as he submitted only a notification of result to obtain the job.
A former registrar at the polytechnic, Bisi Odebunmi, was said to have also left the school after he (Odebunmi) demanded the PhD certificate in an official memo.
Investigation revealed that the Universities of Ibadan and Unilag where Olaolu claimed to have obtained his PhD and Masters respectively said they had no record of him.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, in a statement by its spokesperson, Rasheedat Okoduwa, said the rector had been arrested over the matter.
Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Igbajo Polytechnic, Prof. Olu Odeyemi said Olaolu had been sacked
He said, “He (Olaolu) has been sacked. The governing council had a meeting yesterday (Wednesday) and the board of trustees had another today (Thursday). We made certain resolutions which we planned to release in a communiqué tomorrow (Friday).”
