Ogun, June 17, 2018 (AltAfrika)-Three fake personnel who claimed to belong to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps have been arraigned in a Magistrates’ Court under Agbara Division.
The suspects whose names are given as Mr. Kunle Coker, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Abayomi and Mr. Hammed Ibrahim were arraigned on a three-count of conspiracy to commit felony with impersonation and demanding money with menace and intent to steal, and impersonation as officers of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps.
Though they claimed to be agents working for the Agbara-Igbesa Local Council Development Area, but the Chairman of the council, Dr. Olaoluwa Oniyide, countered them stating that such operation had been declared illegal in the area.
The accused persons were apprehended on the directive of the TRACE Corps Commander/Chief Executive, Cdr. Olaseni Ogunyemi, by operatives of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Agbara Division, and the Divisional Police Command, Agbara.
The Public Relations Officer TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said they were apprehended while carrying out illegal traffic-related duties, “with the intent to deceive, swindle and embarrass the motoring public.”
The case has been adjourned till Wednesday, 4th July, 2018.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Transport to the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Gbenga Opesanwo, noted that the activities of such traffic officials were illegal and their conduct has become an embarrassment to the state government.
He said, “Only the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps and Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, have the legal right to perform traffic duties in the state.”
He hoped that this would serve as a deterrent to other unlawful agents who claim to be working for Local Council Development Areas, “because the case in question would be followed to a logical conclusion.”
