Shell Petroleum admits travesty in Nigeria’s Niger-Delta Region
LONDON, June 1, 2018, (AltAfrika) Shell Petroleum finally and officially admits the travesty unleashed on the good people of our Niger Delta.
It is good to say “I’m sorry”. But as they promised, there must be actions to back up those words to right the wrongs meted on hapless people of Niger Delta to restore their lives, farmlands, fishing waters etc with the billions of Dollars profit made over decades since oil was discovered in the Niger Delta.
It is the hope of many Nigerians that other oil producing companies will follow suit and apologise to the people of Niger Delta and join hands with Shell to do the right thing: Apologise to the people, take concrete measures to remove the oil spills, invest heavily to develop the socio-economic infrastructure in Niger Delta, support them in all ramifications.
The Federal Government of Nigeria should apologise to the people of Niger Delta as well for being passive to the agitation of the Niger Delta people to stand-up to the oil exploration companies to restore their environment, stop gas flaring, stop the destruction of their flora and fauna through oil spillage; ostensibly because of the profit from oil accruing to the coffers of the government and/or personal coffers. It seemed the government tried to mediate but their effort was obviously not enough. Not strong enough for the Oil exploration companies to take them seriously to stop the systemic degradation and impoverishment and untold suffering of the Niger Delta people.
This is a new beginning for the Niger Delta people. Some people have paid with their lives to see this day, not least Ken Saro-Wiwa and other notable sons and daughters of the Niger Delta. We should all join hands and support Shell and other oil companies to clean up and restore the Niger Delta. It is about time to do that. That will be beffiting to the honour and labour of Niger Delta heroes past.
God bless the people of the Niger Delta and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
