Lagos, April 11, 2018 (AltAfrika)-Nigerian Army authority has smashed a criminal gang led by dismissed and deserted soldiers, who have been using officer’s rank to operate.
A security report revealed that the gang members who have been operating in Lagos and Ogun States were arrested at various locations in the two states.
The leader of the gang, Emmanuel Anthony, was a an army corporal, who deserted from the army when he was posted to North East of the country for fear of being killed by Boko Haram insurgents.
Other members of the gang, usually operated in army uniform as paraded at the 81 Army Division HQ, are, ex-corpral Abubakar Suleiman, Private Ibrahim Isah, Abdullahi Mubarak, Ibeh Emeka, Olasunkanmi Olamide, Godwin Emmanuel, Private Ahmed Yahaya, Ale Ayokunle, Robert Danang, Monday Ogar, Emeka Stephen and Bala Gabriel.
Anthony was alleged to have led a gang of fake soldiers who had military uniforms, accoutrements, recruitment forms and ID cards in their possessions to commit criminals offences at various time and locations.
He gang leader further confessed that, after his deseration from the Nigerian Army, he decided to pretend to be an officer and impersonated to be a Lieutenant in the NA.
According to him, he bought the officer uniform and the rank, did fake officer ID card and also printed pass forms which he usually filled and stamped each time he goes out to show any personnel who checked or obstruct him.
Apart from selling of fake recruitment form, the suspect was also using the officer uniform escort second hand vehicles from the border and other crime activities within Lagos axis.
In view of the suspect confession and the one of other dismissed soldiers arrested, 81 Div. provided the following contact numbers for prompt reporting of all cases, especially criminal cases involving both serving, dismissed/desert soldiers to the command for immediate action.

Army authority said, proper de-kitting of all military properties from dismissed personnel should always be carried out by all formations/units, while efforts should be made to trace all deserters and retrieve all military properties at their disposal.
