Nigeria: Ogun river to become navigable – National waterways
The Nigeria National Internal Waterways Authority, NIWA, has announced plan to make Ogun river, which Ogun State was named after to become navigable.
He revealed further that maintenance of security along the Inland Waterways in the three States was very paramount in the mandate of the Authority, adding that the Federal Government had attached a whole Police unit to the Authority for the maintenance of trade and security along the waters.
Engineer Horsfall also told the Alake that he was in the palace to ask for the blessing of the Egba Paramount Ruler as well as asking of the full cooperation of his people on the proposed project.
According to him, people’s cooperation was very crucial in making waterways along Abeokuta and other States beneficial to the generality of the people both in commerce and transportation.
Responding, the Egba Paramount Ruler, congratulated Engineer Horsfall and his management team for their plan to open up Ogun River, from Lagos up to Osun State.
Kabiyesi expressed hope that Ogun river would soon be the de-rocked so as to make water transportation available to the people as well as for tourism.
HRM Gbadebo, while given his assurance to the Management of NIWA of the full cooperation of the people of Egbaland and other stakeholders whose area is transverse by Ogun river, pointed out that, water transportation, like the railway, was a cheaper means of mass movement of the people and goods.
On the NIWA Area Manager entourage are; Commander, Inland Waterways Police, DSP Abiodun Okunola, LIH Finance, Mr. James O. Alao and LIT Marine, Engi. Owolabi A.O.
