Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola
Adetokunbo Fakeye
The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission in Nigeria on Wednesday says having crossed all legal hurdles set against the actualization of this Saturday’s Local Government Election in the state, now set to conduct the election.
This was stated in a statement by the Chairman of the Commission, Otunba Segun Oladitan.
The statement explained that, out of the 389 wards in the State of Osun, candidates in 318 wards have been declared returned unopposed by the Commission as empowered by section 41(1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (As Amended 2015).
It stated further that there will be contest in 71 Wards named as follows: Osun Central, Boripe, Olorunda North and Osogbo LG. In Osun East, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Atakumosa West Central, Ife Central, Ife Central West, Ife East, Ife East Central, Ife Ooye, Ife North,Ife North West and Ife South West. Others include Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Obokun, Obokun East, Oriade, Oriade South and Ife North Area Council. While in Osun West Senatorial District, Ayedaade, Ede North, Ede North Area Council, Egbedore South Administrative Office, Isokan, Iwo and Iwo East.
The statement further revealed that six political parties will be participating in the election.
The parties are: Accord Party, ACPN, ADP, All Progressives Congress (APC) Labour Party (LP) and SOCIAL Democratic Party (SDP).
Otunba Oladitan while calling on the people of the state to troop out enmass to vote for the party and candidates of their choice, assured them of adequate security throughout the period of the election.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has declared, Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26, 2018 as public holiday for the state’s local government election while a human right lawyer, Barrister Kanmi Ajibola who is challenging the State Government over an alleged illegality of the election has faulted the declaration as deliberate move to pre-empt court process.
A press statement made available to journalists in Osogbo by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Mr Sola Fasure, stated: “The 2-day holiday is to enable Osun residents prepare for and participate in the Local Government election scheduled to hold on Saturday, January 27, 2018.”The State Governor, Ogbeni Governor Rauf Aregbesola, urges the people of the state to enthusiastically exercise their civic duty by participating in this historic parliamentary election into local governments, the first of its kind in any state of Nigeria.

“He also admonishes them to be orderly, law abiding and conduct themselves peacefully, for the exercise to be successful.

“He assures all of the preparedness of the state electoral commission to conduct a hitch-free, credible, free, fair and transparent election that we will all be proud of. Law enforcement agencies are also ready and put on alert to protect lives and property and prevent breach of the peace and disruption of the election.

“Governor Aregbesola encourages the winners to magnanimous in victory and the losers to be gallant in defeat.

However, one Barrister Kanmi Ajibola has slammed the Osun State government for hurriedly declaring Thursday and Friday as public holiday, saying it was a deliberate move to stall the continuation of the ongoing court proceedings already fixed for Thursday, Jan.25, 2018 over the state Local Government parliamentary election billed for Saturday, January 27.

Bar. Ajibola who spoke in Ilesa on Wednesday insisted that there was no basis for the two days holiday declared by the state government.

“This is quite unfortunate. This is a coward action by Mr. Rauf Aregbesola and his government. We were still in the court premises on Tuesday when government lawyers were boosting that they will inform the governor to declare Thursday and Friday as public holiday so as to halt this process.

“I thought it was a joke that two days holiday will be declared over local government election. Even when the governorship election was conducted, only one day was declared as holiday. Anyway, no matter the tactics, this LG election will not stand.

“I suspect foul play. I suspect high level of corruption somehow. I suspect some people were insisting on going ahead with this election which they knew can not be upheld by any court in Nigeria to line their pockets with the proceeds of the polls. If not, why the desperation and the hurry? But we shall get there at the appropriate time”, he stated.

Justice Kola Adegoke of the State High Court, Ilesa who had adjourned the case instituted by Ajibola against the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the State House of Assembly, the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) and eight other political parties asked the litigants to return for further hearing on Thursday, January 25.

Although, counsel to the state government who is also the state Solicitor-General had canvassed that the matter be brought back on Friday, the judge insisted that justice must be done on the matter as the day canvassed for by him was so closed to the purported date for the polls.

Justice Adegoke had directed that on Thursday, he would hear the application for injunction seeking from the court a restraining order against the conduct of the election, the preliminary objection filed by the defendants challenging the jurisdiction and all other pending motions.

He warned that his court would not entertain any motion for adjournment as litigants in the case must file and serve all the appropriate papers in the suit, “Justice must be done and the court has to give accelerated hearing to the matter at hand since the said election is said to be slated for January 27”.
