London, Nov. 10, 2017 (AltAfrika)– Worried by the” proliferation “of Yewa aspirants for the elusive governorship seat in Ogun State, South West Nigeria, concerned elders in Yewa have formed a new pressure group to persuade their sons and daughters interested in the governorship race to agree to a consensus candiddate to boost the chances of Yewa
Of the three Senatorial Districts in Ogun State, only Ogun West, comprising mainly of the Yewas and Aworis is yet to produce a democractically elected governor of the state since creation in 1976
The incumbent governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has in recent time declared his support for the Senatorial District to produce the next governor of the state but this has thrown the state’s political landscape into crisis.
The new pressure group ,the Committee of Ogun West Patriots, (COWEP) is chaired by one Dr Leke Ibrahim.
The group is of the opinion that, the district cannot afford to go into the coming elections with too many aspirants who would end up creating disaffection and dividing the votes of the people.
According to the Chairman of the group, “We shall be carrying out series of activities including interactive sessions and consultations among aspirants and political leaders aimed at ensuring that Ogun West presents only popular candidate from strong political parties that have potentials to win the election”.
He said that the group had started appealing to the political leaders and the governorship aspirants to see one another as members of the family with a common goal-to break the jinx that had prevented Ogun West candidates from winning in past elections.
Other members of the new pressure group are Comrade Wale Hassan, Dr. Olufemi Dosumu, Mr. Ore Salako, Hon. Chief Adisa Olaewe,. Mr. Wasiu Fagbohun, Mr. Uthman Khalid-Salako, Kehinde Akinlade, Olusola Ojekunle, Mr. Semiu Fatogun, Barrister Babatunde Ogunsola, Edun Emmanuel, Mr. Femi Dokunmu and Musibau Obayomi
No fewer than eight aspirants from Yewa have signified their intention to run for the governorship seat from the ruling All Peoples Congress. There are many others from same Senatorial area from other parties.
