London, Oct. 24, 2017 (AltAfrika)-Development of women and children was on the front burner at a seminar organised by the National Women’s Conference organised by Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), in Lagos, former Capital City of Nigeria.
The conference was held at the Convention Centre of Eko Hotel and Suites in the heart of the city.
It was a day of many inspiring sessions to make women be determined to keep creating and transforming. It was a day Nigerian women also shone like a million stars as influential men attested to their ability and competence in leadership and nation building. The conference was the 17th edition in the series.
The State First Lady, who doubles as the Chief host and chairperson of the Conference, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, in her opening speech said, “the theme of the conference is expected to focus on the ingenuity of the Nigerian women in the pursuit of innovative and practical solutions, aimed at achieving sustainable development within her immediate sphere and community at large.”
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, who was the Chairman on the occasion, who spoke on the confab theme: “She creates, she transforms,” testified to the fact that celebrating women shouldn’t be an event but a habit, adding that, “women liberation is men’s liberation.”
Another Governor, Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in the south-western part of Nigeria also testified that, “If you put women on a driver’s seat in this country, this country will change (for the better).” He added that, in Ekiti State, during the local government elections, if men scored 60 and women 40 per cent, the women would be declared winners to encourage them.”
Some delegates at the conference, who spoke with our correspondent commended the COWLSO’s Chairman and Lagos First lady, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode and her team for continuous improvement on the program every year as well as for being there always for women and children.
All the Governors in attendance- Edo, Ekiti, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States commended Lagos State for always being the pacesetter in all good things. Governor Dickson of Bayelsa State in the South-Southern axis of the country said that his state will replicate the women conference as one of the good things they are emulating in Lagos.
Edo State Governor also joked that other states are not only copying good programmes from Lagos but ‘stealing good ideas.”
The host Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, admitted that, “Women impact positively on children, family, nation and the world. And they are always committed to given assignments.” He disclosed that N2.1 billion has so far been disbursed to women in Lagos State from Employment Trust Fund, even as he urged more women to key into the programme.
Wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo in her comments urged women to brace up for the tasks ahead as the next generation is waiting for them, to show them how to create and transform. “As women, we must join forces to make things better,” she admonished.
Mrs Osinbajo expected women to create the right value in children, in our homes, our offices, the nation and the world at large.
